Who might be able to join this trial:
- You have a permanent form of irregular heartbeat called atrial fibrillation.
- You have been admitted to hospital at least once in the past 12 months because of heart failure.
- Your heart's pumping strength is above 40% (as measured by a heart scan).
- Your resting heart rate is 110 beats per minute or fewer on average.
- A recent blood test (within the last 30 days) shows a certain heart stress marker (NT-proBNP) at or above 900 pg/ml.
- You are 18 years of age or older.
- You are able to understand what the study involves and are willing to give your written agreement to take part.
Who may not be able to join:
- You are considered severely frail, or you have a serious illness that means you are not expected to live for more than 12 months.
- You are currently experiencing an acute (sudden and severe) heart failure episode, or your blood pressure is very low at the time of joining the trial.
- You have severe long-term kidney disease (confirm with trial site).
- You have serious disease of the mitral or aortic valves in your heart.
- You have anaemia, meaning your blood's haemoglobin level is below 10 g/dl.
- Your body mass index (BMI) is 35 or above (sometimes called morbid obesity).
- You have severe chronic lung disease (COPD rated at stage 3 or above).
- You already need a pacemaker or a type of heart device called an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) for another reason.
- You have a specific type of thickened heart muscle condition called obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.
- You have a heart muscle condition caused by a substance building up in the heart, such as amyloidosis, sarcoidosis, or Fabry disease (confirm with trial site).
- You are currently taking part in another clinical trial.
