Who might be able to join this trial:

  • Men between 18 and 70 years of age who have given their informed consent to participate
  • People whose tumour is located between 6 and 12 centimetres from the opening of the back passage, as measured by a specialised scope
  • People who have been diagnosed with rectal cancer confirmed by a tissue sample taken during a bowel examination

  • People with normal urinary function, normal erection function, and ejaculation function rated at Level I (confirm with trial site)

Who may not be able to join:

  • People who have previously had major surgery on the abdomen or pelvis
  • People who need emergency surgery because of complications from their rectal cancer, such as bleeding, blockage, or a tear in the bowel
  • People whose cancer has spread to the pelvis or to other parts of the body
  • People who have already received radiotherapy or a combination of chemotherapy and radiotherapy before surgery (neoadjuvant treatment)
  • People who are not sexually active
