Who might be able to join this trial:
- Men between 18 and 70 years of age who have given their informed consent to participate
- People whose tumour is located between 6 and 12 centimetres from the opening of the back passage, as measured by a specialised scope
- People who have been diagnosed with rectal cancer confirmed by a tissue sample taken during a bowel examination
- People whose cancer has been assessed as an early-to-intermediate stage (classified as cT1–3aN0M0 according to ESMO 2013 guidelines) before any surgery (confirm with trial site)
- People for whom surgeons expect to be able to remove the tumour completely during the operation
- People with normal urinary function, normal erection function, and ejaculation function rated at Level I (confirm with trial site)
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have previously had major surgery on the abdomen or pelvis
- People who need emergency surgery because of complications from their rectal cancer, such as bleeding, blockage, or a tear in the bowel
- People whose cancer has spread to the pelvis or to other parts of the body
- People who have already received radiotherapy or a combination of chemotherapy and radiotherapy before surgery (neoadjuvant treatment)
- People who are not sexually active
