Who might be able to join this trial:
This trial has several different groups, and the criteria differ depending on which group a person may be considered for:
Recently diagnosed group:
- Children aged between 1 and 15 years old
- Recently diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, based on recognised international criteria
At-risk group:
- Children aged between 1 and 15 years old
- Has a brother or sister with type 1 diabetes
- Carries specific genetic markers known as HLA DR3 and DR4 (confirm with trial site)
Control group (general):
- Children aged between 1 and 15 years old
- Does not carry the genetic markers linked to a higher risk of type 1 diabetes
- Does not have antibodies against pancreas-related proteins
Control group (for a stomach and intestine examination procedure):
- Children aged between 1 and 15 years old
- Being investigated for possible coeliac disease or stomach inflammation
Who may not be able to join:
For all groups:
- Children who do not have health insurance coverage
- Cases where parents or legal guardians are not able to sign the consent forms
- Children who have a personal history of an autoimmune or inflammatory condition, other than type 1 diabetes (for the relevant groups)
- Children who have used steroid medications (corticosteroids) in the month before joining the trial
- Children who are pregnant
- Children with a medical reason that would prevent the use of local anaesthetic products
For the stomach/intestine examination groups only:
- Children under 8 years old for the recently diagnosed group requiring this procedure
- Children under 4 years old for the control group requiring this procedure
- Children with heart or breathing problems, irregular heart rhythm, or blood clotting conditions, or who are taking blood-thinning medications
- Children with a known allergy to anaesthetic medications
