Who might be able to join this trial:

  • People who are scheduled for a planned (non-emergency) heart valve replacement surgery using a biological (tissue-based) valve, with no other heart procedures being done at the same time
  • People who have a normal, regular heart rhythm and are not taking any heart rhythm medications at the time of surgery, except for beta-blocker medications
  • People who have been taking a cholesterol-lowering medication (commonly known as a "statin") for at least 7 days and for some time in the 3 months before surgery
  • People who are older than 60 years of age
  • People who are willing to take part and have signed a consent form agreeing to be randomly assigned to a treatment group

Who may not be able to join:

  • People who have a history of a heart rhythm condition called atrial fibrillation
  • People who have previously had heart surgery
  • People with a liver condition where a specific liver enzyme (ALT) is more than twice the normal upper limit, which may indicate the liver is not working well
  • People whose blood creatinine level is above 200 µmol/L, which may indicate reduced kidney function
