Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who have had atrial fibrillation (an irregular heartbeat) recorded on a heart tracing test lasting longer than 30 seconds, within the past 6 months.
- People whose situation makes them suitable for a procedure to close off a small pouch in the heart called the left atrial appendage — this includes people at high risk of stroke or bleeding based on standard medical scoring tools, people who are unable to take blood-thinning medications, or people who have chosen not to take blood-thinning medications after being fully informed of the reasons they are recommended.
- People aged 18 or older.
- People who are able to understand and sign a consent form for the study.
Who may not be able to join:
- People whose atrial fibrillation is caused by a treatable condition, such as a thyroid problem, recent major surgery, injury, or acute alcohol intoxication.
- People who also have certain other heart rhythm problems, such as atrial flutter or a fast heart rhythm coming from the lower chambers of the heart.
- People who have previously had surgery or a catheter-based procedure to treat atrial fibrillation.
- People who have previously had heart surgery, including heart valve replacement or repair of a hole in the heart.
- People who have had a major heart event in the past 3 months, such as a heart attack or a life-threatening heart rhythm emergency.
- People with a history of a heart condition present from birth.
- People who have previously had a procedure to destroy the electrical connection between the upper and lower chambers of the heart.
- People who have had part of a lung removed for any reason.
- People who have another serious illness where life expectancy is less than 1 year.
- Women who are able to become pregnant.
- People who are already taking part in another interventional clinical trial that could affect their health outcomes.
- People who are unable to understand or sign a consent form.
