Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who are scheduled to have a type of keyhole surgery performed through the back passage (called transanal endoscopic surgery) at the QEII Health Sciences Center in Halifax, carried out by one of their specialist bowel surgeons
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have ongoing, hard-to-control constipation that does not improve with dietary changes or stool softeners
- People who have previously had radiation treatment to the pelvic area
- People who have inflammatory bowel disease (such as Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis)
- People who are having this type of surgery again on the same area that was treated before
- People who are not able to self-administer enemas (a liquid inserted into the back passage to clear the bowel)
- People who are unable to tolerate either of the two bowel preparation methods used in this trial due to health reasons
- People aged over 75
- People with a confirmed diagnosis of congestive heart failure (a condition where the heart does not pump blood as well as it should)
- People who take a water tablet called Lasix (furosemide) or a similar medication (known as a loop diuretic) every day
- People who take steroid medication on a long-term, ongoing basis
- People whose transanal endoscopic surgery is being combined with another surgical procedure at the same time
