Who might be able to join this trial:
- People diagnosed with idiopathic Parkinson's syndrome (a specific type of Parkinson's disease) according to recognised Movement Disorders Society guidelines.
- People who have received deep brain stimulation (DBS) surgery on both sides of the brain in an area called the subthalamic nucleus.
- People who had their DBS surgery at least 3 months before joining the trial.
- People who are able to give their written consent to participate.
- People who are fluent in Swiss-German or German.
- People whose speech difficulties (dysarthria) appear to have been caused or worsened by their DBS treatment — either noticed around the time of the DBS surgery, or speech that improves when the stimulation strength is turned down during routine check-ups.
Who may not be able to join:
- People whose speech difficulties are caused by a condition other than Parkinson's disease or DBS, such as a stroke or a muscle condition like myasthenia.
- People who have been clinically diagnosed with aphasia (a condition affecting the ability to understand or produce language).
- People who are unable to follow the study procedures due to language barriers, psychological conditions, or dementia. A memory and thinking test (called the MoCA) will be used, and people who score 20 or below out of 30 points will not be eligible.
- People whose Parkinson's medication was changed in the four weeks before joining certain parts of the trial (parts 1 and 3).
- People whose DBS device settings were changed in the four weeks before joining certain parts of the trial (parts 1 and 3).
- People experiencing depression with active thoughts of suicide.
- People who are pregnant.
