Who might be able to join this trial:

  • People who have been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes for at least one year
  • People who are post-menopausal (at least one year since their last period), or who have had their uterus and both ovaries surgically removed
  • People who are able to do both aerobic exercise (such as walking or cycling) and resistance exercise (such as weightlifting)
  • People who are able to travel to and attend appointments at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Alberta

Who may not be able to join:

  • People whose long-term blood sugar control reading (HbA1c) is above 9.9%
  • People who experience low blood sugar levels (hypoglycemia) often and without warning
  • People who have changed the way they manage their insulin within the last 2 months
  • People whose blood pressure is above 140/95
  • People who have severe nerve damage, particularly in the hands or feet
  • People with a history of heart or cardiovascular disease
  • People who have muscle or joint injuries that would interfere with their ability to exercise
  • People who take medications other than insulin that affect how the body manages blood sugar
  • People whose BMI (a measure of body weight relative to height) is above 30
  • People who currently smoke
  • People who drink more than 2 alcoholic drinks per day on average
