Who might be able to join this trial:

  • People aged 60 or older
  • People who speak English
  • People who have had muscle or joint pain (such as lower back pain, osteoarthritis, or fibromyalgia) on most days for the past 3 months, where the pain gets in the way of daily activities
  • People whose pain rates 4 or higher out of 10 in intensity
  • People whose pain interferes significantly with daily life, based on a standard questionnaire score (confirm with trial site)

  • People who are able to take part in activities at home
  • People who are interested in a program that does not involve medication

Who may not be able to join:

  • People aged 59 or younger
  • People who do not have access to a telephone
  • People who do not speak English
  • People who are not willing to be randomly placed into either of the two study groups
  • People who are not interested in a non-medication-based program
  • People with uncorrected hearing or vision problems that would make it hard to take part in telephone sessions or read a step-counting device screen
  • People with moderate or severe memory or thinking difficulties, based on a short screening test
  • People who rely on a wheelchair, are confined to bed, or have severe balance problems or severe joint disease that would prevent them from taking part in a physical activity program
  • People who were hospitalised in the last 3 months for a condition that would interfere with a home-based physical activity program (such as a fall, stroke, heart attack, heart failure, gout attack, or surgery for blocked arteries)
  • People with current thoughts of suicide, an uncontrolled psychotic disorder, a psychiatric hospitalisation within the past year, or who are currently enrolled in a substance use treatment program
