Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who are older than 60 years of age
- People who have been diagnosed with a type of stroke called ESUS (a stroke where no clear cause was found) within the last 180 days (about 6 months) from when the stroke started
- People in whom a hole in the heart called a PFO (patent foramen ovale) was found on a heart ultrasound, and this hole is considered to be linked to the stroke
- People who, or whose legal representative, have agreed to take part in the trial
Who may not be able to join:
- People who had a TIA (transient ischemic attack, sometimes called a "mini-stroke") rather than a full stroke
- People whose stroke occurred in an area of the brain supplied by a blood vessel with a significant narrowing or blockage
- People whose heart tests (such as an ECG, Holter monitor, or heart ultrasound) showed a high-risk heart condition that could have caused the stroke
- People whose stroke may have been caused by another identified condition, such as inflammation of blood vessels, a torn blood vessel, blood vessel spasm, drug use, or a condition called Moyamoya disease
- People who currently have active cancer
- People who need to take blood-thinning medication (anticoagulants) on a long-term basis
- People who have had a bad reaction or side effects to anti-clotting medications called antiplatelets
- People who currently have active internal bleeding
- People who do not wish to take part in the trial
