Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who are admitted to hospital for a vaginal or cesarean birth at 24 weeks of pregnancy or later
- People who have high blood pressure during their admission, meaning their top blood pressure number is 140 or higher, or their bottom number is 90 or higher, measured on two separate occasions at least 4 hours apart
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have a history of moderate persistent asthma, coronary artery disease, heart failure, a certain type of irregular heart rhythm called AV block, or fluid in the lungs
- People for whom either of the two study medications — Nifedipine or Labetalol — would be considered unsafe or unsuitable by their doctor
- People whose heart rate is below 60 or above 110 beats per minute
- People whose primary language is not English or Spanish
