Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who are scheduled for cardiac surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.
- People who are scheduled to have mitral or aortic valve surgery, with or without also having coronary artery bypass grafting (a procedure to improve blood flow to the heart).
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have a history of permanent atrial fibrillation (a long-term irregular heart rhythm condition), or who have had a heart assist device implanted or removed.
- People whose planned surgery does not require the use of a heart-lung bypass machine during the procedure.
- People whose planned surgery requires a technique involving cooling the body to very low temperatures to temporarily stop circulation.
- People who currently have an active infection or sepsis (a serious, body-wide response to infection).
- People who are taking immunosuppressive medications (drugs that reduce the immune system's activity) before surgery, including steroids.
- People who are taking anti-arrhythmic medications (drugs to control irregular heart rhythms) before surgery, with the exception of beta-blockers.
- People who have an immunodeficiency syndrome (a condition where the immune system does not work properly).
- People who have a known neurological disorder (a condition affecting the brain or nervous system).
- People who require a central line (a type of intravenous line) placed in the left internal jugular vein in the neck.
- Note: People who have had a Maze procedure or left atrial appendage ligation are not automatically excluded from the trial (confirm with trial site).
