Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who have been referred for an ablation procedure or Maze surgery at Stanford Medicine for persistent atrial fibrillation (a type of irregular heartbeat that lasts more than 7 days or requires a medical procedure to stop)
- People whose irregular heartbeat has not been controlled by at least one heart rhythm medication, or who were unable to tolerate that medication — and for those being considered for Maze surgery, people who have already tried a previous ablation procedure that did not work
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have active reduced blood flow to the heart or severely worsening heart failure
- People who have a blood clot in the heart, as detected by a special ultrasound scan of the heart (done through the throat)
- People who are pregnant (to reduce exposure to X-ray imaging used during the procedure)
- People who are unable or unwilling to give their formal agreement to participate
- People who have valve disease caused by rheumatic fever
- People who have a condition involving blood clots in the veins, or who have a vein filter in place
- People who have had previous chest surgery — this may make Maze surgery less suitable (confirm with trial site)
