Who might be able to join this trial:
- You are male
- You are between 25 and 50 years old
- You speak German
- You are currently diagnosed with major depression (assessed using a structured interview called the SCID-5)
- You are willing and able to give written consent to participate
Who may not be able to join:
- You are unable to give informed consent to take part in the trial
- You have previously received testosterone or other hormone treatments
- You have a history of any other mental health condition, with the exception of a mild form of long-term depression (dysthymia) or a mild alcohol or substance use issue (confirm with trial site)
- You are currently taking, or have previously taken, any medication for a mental health condition
- You are currently receiving, or have previously received, any form of psychological therapy or counselling, with the exception of treatment for mild long-term depression or mild alcohol/substance use issues (confirm with trial site)
- You have another mental health condition in addition to your major depression
- You have a serious physical illness that needs to be treated as a priority
- You have been diagnosed with prostate cancer, a pre-cancerous prostate condition (PIN), severe urinary problems, a blood condition called erythrocytosis, or sleep apnea that has been diagnosed but is not being treated
- You are currently taking thyroid hormones, finasteride, epilepsy medications, muscle-building (anabolic) compounds, strong sleeping tablets more than twice a week, long-acting sedative medications (benzodiazepines), antipsychotic medications, or any drugs that affect testosterone levels in the blood
- You have a genetic or hormonal condition such as Klinefelter's syndrome, Cushing's disease, Addison's disease, or Hashimoto's thyroiditis
