Who might be able to join this trial:

• You are currently staying as an inpatient at a psychiatric unit (or a general medical unit waiting to be moved to psychiatric care)
• You are between 18 and 70 years old
• You have been diagnosed with major depressive disorder (a serious form of depression) and have been going through a depressive episode for at least 8 weeks
• You are experiencing thoughts of suicide, as shown by your scores on a standard assessment and the reason for your hospital admission
• You are in generally good physical health, based on your medical history and any tests the study doctor may need to run
• If you can become pregnant, you are either using an accepted form of birth control, are sexually abstinent, or have a partner who has had a vasectomy — and you have a negative pregnancy test at the start of the study
• If you cannot become pregnant (for example, due to surgery or menopause for at least one year), you meet this requirement automatically
• You have access to a mobile phone or computer with an internet connection
• You are able to read, understand, and sign a consent form agreeing to take part
• You have, or will have at discharge, a doctor or other qualified provider (such as a psychiatrist or nurse practitioner) managing your psychiatric medications

Who may not be able to join:

• You have previously been treated with ketamine given through an IV (intravenous drip)
• You are currently pregnant or breastfeeding
• You can become pregnant but are not willing to use birth control during the study
• You have a serious unstable physical health condition, such as severe liver or kidney disease, uncontrolled high blood pressure, or uncontrolled overactive thyroid
• You have been diagnosed in the last 6 months with a moderate to severe substance use disorder (note: mild or moderate alcohol or cannabis use disorder may still be allowed — confirm with trial site)
• You have a history of bipolar disorder, or have experienced any symptoms of psychosis during a current or previous depressive episode
• You have another significant mental health condition (such as an eating disorder, OCD, or PTSD) that is, or has recently been within the last 6 months, more prominent than your depression
• You are currently receiving electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), a treatment that uses electrical pulses to treat depression
• You are currently taking high or frequent doses of certain sedating medications, such as benzodiazepines (e.g., Valium), opioids, barbiturates, or similar drugs
• You have dementia, delirium, or any other condition that significantly affects memory or thinking
• You have a significant abnormal finding on a physical examination that could affect your safety or the study results
• You are unable or unwilling to follow the study procedures
• You have untreated high blood pressure above a certain level at the time of screening (confirm with trial site)
• You have had a heart attack within the past year
• You have a history of brain surgery, serious brain infections (such as meningitis or encephalitis), epilepsy, degenerative brain diseases (such as Alzheimer's or Parkinson's), or a significant head injury within the past 2 years
• Your thyroid hormone levels are outside the normal range and considered significant by the study doctor
• You have other significant abnormal results from blood or lab tests at the time of screening
• You have diabetes that is not well controlled (for example, a blood sugar marker called HbA1c above 8.5%), or you were hospitalised for diabetes-related reasons in the past 12 weeks
• You have untreated narrow-angle glaucoma (a type of eye condition — confirm with trial site)
• You are unable to arrange a reliable person to escort you to and from study visits safely
