Who might be able to join this trial:
For people with Parkinson's disease (PD):
- Adults aged 18 or older
- People who have been diagnosed with confirmed, advanced Parkinson's disease based on established medical guidelines
- People whose brain MRI scan before surgery was normal or essentially normal
- People who are able to attend follow-up appointments for the full length of the study
- People whose treating doctor has already decided that deep brain stimulation (DBS) surgery is part of their routine care, and that a specific brain region called the subthalamic nucleus is the right surgical target
For people joining as healthy comparison participants (controls):
- Adults aged 18 or older
- People who have not been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, any other movement disorder, or any other significant neurological condition
Who may not be able to join:
For people with Parkinson's disease:
- People under 18 years of age
- People with certain medical conditions that could increase surgical risk, such as uncontrolled high blood pressure, heart disease, or blood clotting problems
- People who have been diagnosed with, or are suspected of having, an atypical form of Parkinsonism (such as PSP, MSA, or CBD), medication-caused Parkinsonism, or a significant neurological condition other than Parkinson's disease
- People who have been diagnosed with a movement disorder that has a psychological rather than neurological cause
- People who have previously had DBS surgery or a brain tissue ablation procedure
- People who have been diagnosed with dementia, or whose memory and thinking test scores fall below the 5th percentile for their age and education level (based on standard pre-surgical testing)
- People who are unable to stop taking Parkinson's medications for at least 12 hours before a scheduled visit
For healthy comparison participants:
- People under 18 years of age
- People who have previously been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, another movement disorder, or any other significant neurological condition
