- People between 50 and 80 years old who have been assessed as having a moderate level of health risk for surgery (known as ASA grade II or III)
- People with Parkinson's disease who are having deep brain stimulation (DBS) electrodes placed on both sides of the brain in an area called the subthalamic nucleus (STN)
- People who have signed a form giving their informed consent to take part
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have obstructive sleep apnea (a condition where breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep)
- People whose body mass index (BMI, a measure of body weight relative to height) is above 30
- People whose airway is assessed by doctors as likely to be difficult to manage during anaesthesia
- People who have severe anxiety before the operation
- People who have serious problems with important organs, such as heart failure, or significant kidney or liver problems
- People who have a known allergy to anaesthetic medicines
