Who might be able to join this trial:

  • People aged 55 years or older
  • People who have been diagnosed with a stroke where the cause could not be found, after completing a standard set of tests including brain scans, blood vessel scans, a 24-hour heart rhythm test, and a heart ultrasound
  • People who have had a stroke affecting the outer layer of the brain, where a blocked blood vessel in the brain was found (preferred but confirm with trial site)
  • People whose stroke has not left them severely disabled (based on a standard disability scale, confirm with trial site)

Who may not be able to join:

  • People diagnosed with a small deep stroke (lacunar infarction) or a temporary stroke-like episode (sometimes called a "mini-stroke")
  • People whose stroke has a known cause, such as a narrowed artery, an irregular heart rhythm (like atrial fibrillation), a heart valve problem, a recent heart attack, a hole in the heart that caused the stroke, or an unusual cause like a blood clotting disorder or a torn artery
  • People who have a pacemaker
  • People whose situation makes it difficult to attend follow-up appointments or stay in contact with the research team throughout the study — for example, if they are being moved to a long-term care facility
  • People who are unwilling to wear a heart monitoring device as part of the study
  • People who are unable to understand the study procedures
