Who might be able to join this trial:
For people with fulminant type 1 diabetes:
- People who developed dangerous levels of ketones in their blood (a serious complication) very soon after their blood sugar first became high
- People whose blood sugar was at or above 16.0 mmol/L and whose HbA1c (a 3-month average blood sugar measure) was below 8.7% at their first medical visit
- People whose body was producing very little or no insulin, shown by very low levels of a substance called C-peptide in their urine or blood at the time of diagnosis
For healthy volunteers (normal control group):
- People whose blood sugar levels fall within the normal range, confirmed by a standard sugar-loading test (a fasting blood sugar below 5.6 mmol/L and a 2-hour blood sugar below 7.8 mmol/L)
- People who are willing to provide a small blood sample (3ml) for genetic testing and who have signed a consent form
Who may not be able to join:
For people with fulminant type 1 diabetes:
- People who had already been diagnosed with diabetes before this study
For healthy volunteers:
- People who have a long-term condition affecting the heart, brain, liver, kidneys, or other organs
- People who have another autoimmune disease
- People who have or have had cancer
- People who have a family history of diabetes
