Who might be able to join this trial:

  • People who are admitted to hospital (inpatients) as either male or female
  • People who are 18 years of age or older
  • People who have been diagnosed with severe depression, either as a single episode or recurring, or severe depression as part of bipolar disorder, based on the ICD-11 diagnostic system
  • People whose depression scores 24 or higher on a standard depression rating scale called the HAMD-17
  • People who are able to understand the study information and are willing to sign a consent form
  • Women who test negative for pregnancy on a urine test
  • People who have been assessed by an anaesthesia doctor as suitable for ECT (electroconvulsive therapy), with a health rating of 3 or below on the standard anaesthesia risk scale
  • People who have been taking their antidepressant and antipsychotic medications at a stable dose for at least 7 days before the first treatment

Who may not be able to join:

  • People with serious physical or neurological health conditions, particularly those with current or past raised pressure in the brain, severe uncontrolled high blood pressure, bleeding or bulging blood vessels in the brain, or a recent heart attack
  • People who currently have or have previously had a diagnosis of schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder
  • People who have significant abnormal results on a general physical examination or routine blood tests
  • People who are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • People who have a known allergy to the study medications or their ingredients
