Who might be able to join this trial:
- People aged between 18 and 75 years old
- People who have been diagnosed with major depressive disorder and are currently going through a depressive episode, as defined by the DSM-5 (a standard medical guideline for mental health conditions)
- People whose depression symptoms score above 21 on the MDI (Major Depression Inventory), a standard rating scale, at the time of screening
- People who have been on a stable treatment plan — such as medication and/or talking therapy — for at least 4 weeks before the trial begins
- People who are willing and able to use the trial device for 1 hour per day over 6 weeks, following the scheduled plan
- People who can understand spoken and written information about the study and are willing to sign a consent form
Who may not be able to join:
- People with a history of migraines triggered by light (photosensitive migraines) or epileptic seizures
- People with a known eye condition that may be sensitive to light-based treatment
- People with a known diagnosis of bipolar disorder, as defined by DSM-5 criteria
- People with thoughts of suicide at a level of 2 or higher on a standard clinical scale (HAM-D item 3), or where there is any uncertainty about the level of risk from the patient or the doctor
- People who are currently experiencing psychotic symptoms (note: people who have had psychotic depression in the past, or whose psychotic symptoms have since resolved, may still be considered — confirm with trial site)
- People with a current drug or alcohol dependency, based on medical records or a clinical interview
- People with a known history of borderline personality disorder
- People who are currently taking part in another clinical treatment trial
- People with a progressive neurological condition or a cancer-related illness
- People who are unable to understand the study procedures or how to use the trial device
- People who are pregnant at the time of joining the trial, or women of childbearing age who are not using reliable contraception
