- People who have been diagnosed with rectal or anal cancer
- People who are scheduled to have a robot-assisted surgery to remove the rectum and surrounding tissue (a procedure called abdominoperineal resection)
- People whose surgery plan includes rebuilding the pelvic floor and/or vagina using a section of muscle taken from the abdomen (called a rectus abdominis muscle flap)
Who may not be able to join:
- People whose health or other factors mean the surgical team has determined they are not suitable for the robot-assisted version of this surgery
- People for whom the abdominal muscle needed for the reconstruction is not available to be used
- People whose surgical wound is not considered suitable for repair using this type of abdominal muscle flap
