Who might be able to join this trial:
- You are between 14 and 18 years old
- You are currently enrolled in high school
- On school nights (weekdays), you either go to bed late (at or after 10:30 pm) and sleep 7 hours or less, OR you go to bed early (before 10:30 pm) and sleep more than 7 hours — this will be checked using a sleep questionnaire
- You have experienced at least 2 stressful or difficult life events, based on a screening questionnaire
- You have at least a mild level of depressive symptoms, based on a mood questionnaire
- You can read and speak English fluently
Who may not be able to join:
- You currently have a moderate or severe alcohol or drug use problem (showing 4 or more related symptoms)
- You have been diagnosed by a doctor with narcolepsy or a condition causing excessive daytime sleepiness (idiopathic hypersomnia)
- You have ever been diagnosed with bipolar disorder or a schizophrenia-related condition
- You have certain serious medical conditions, such as a significant neurological disorder, serious heart problems, or a head injury that caused you to be unconscious for more than 5 minutes
- You have metal or other materials in your body that would make an MRI scan unsafe (confirm with trial site)
- You have an eye disease, epilepsy, or take certain medications that could be affected by bright light therapy — such as some psychiatric, heart, antimalarial, or skin treatment medications (confirm with trial site)
- You currently take melatonin supplements and are not willing to stop taking them for the entire duration of the study
Additional scheduling notes (appointments may be rescheduled rather than disqualifying you):
- You are currently considered at serious risk of suicide, as assessed by a clinician
- You have traveled across two or more time zones within the month before an overnight study visit
- You have recently started or stopped a prescribed medication within the past 2 months
- Your prescribed medication dose has recently changed (confirm timing with trial site)
- A change in your medications is expected during the study period
- You have symptoms of a contagious airborne illness (such as a cold or flu) before a lab visit
- You have a blood alcohol level above a very low threshold on the day of a visit (you would be rescheduled to another date)
