Who might be able to join this trial:
- People aged 18 to 85 years old
- People diagnosed with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD — a condition where stomach acid flows back into the food pipe) who experience regurgitation (stomach contents coming back up) and symptoms in the throat or airways, such as burning throat, chronic cough, hoarseness, or asthma
- People diagnosed with GERD who do not have throat or airway symptoms, recruited through gastroenterology or ear, nose, and throat clinics
- People diagnosed with asthma (with or without throat or airway reflux symptoms), including those with mild, moderate, or severe asthma — as long as they are not having an active asthma flare-up at the time of the study
- People who have been on long-term acid-suppressing medication but still experience ongoing regurgitation and throat or airway symptoms, and who score above 13 on a standard reflux symptom questionnaire
- People with Barrett's esophagus (a condition affecting the lining of the food pipe) confirmed by a previous tissue biopsy
Who may not be able to join:
- People younger than 18 or older than 85
- People with a current problem with alcohol or drug misuse
- People with a history of ear, nose, throat, or lung conditions that are thought to be caused by acid reflux
- People with a history of cancer of the head or neck, or who have had chemotherapy or radiation therapy to the head or neck area
- People who are not able to give their own consent to participate
- Women who are pregnant
- People with a known allergy to Lidocaine, a local anaesthetic used as a nasal spray during the study procedure
- People with an allergy to green food dye
- People with asthma who are currently experiencing an active flare-up, including symptoms such as breathlessness, wheezing, or chest tightness
