Who might be able to join this trial:

• You have been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease at a moderate to fairly advanced stage, confirmed by a specialist neurologist who reviewed a standardized video assessment of your movement
• You have trouble swallowing safely, meaning liquids may go toward your airway, or you have a weak cough that may not protect your lungs effectively (as measured by specific swallowing and cough tests)
• You are not currently taking part in any exercise-based swallowing therapy
• You are between 50 and 90 years old

Who may not be able to join:

• You have another neurological condition such as multiple sclerosis, a history of stroke, or a brain tumor
• You have a history of head or neck cancer
• You have a history of breathing conditions such as COPD or other lung/airway diseases
• You have smoked within the last five years
• You have high blood pressure that is not well controlled by treatment
• You have severe depression (scoring above 28 on a standard depression scale) or significant memory/thinking difficulties (scoring below 19 on a standard cognitive test)
• You have an allergy to capsaicin (the compound that makes chili peppers hot) or barium (a substance used in some swallowing tests)
• You live more than 1.5 hours away (door to door) from either Teachers College at Columbia University or Purdue University
