Who might be able to join this trial:
- Adults aged 18 or older
- People who have been diagnosed with multiple myeloma, referred to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI) transplant team, and placed on the waiting list for their first autologous stem cell transplant
- People who are planning to receive an autologous stem cell transplant at DFCI in 8 weeks or more, with or without other treatments at the same time
- People who have been cleared by their treating doctor or a certified clinical exercise specialist to safely do moderate-to-vigorous aerobic and resistance exercise, as well as fitness testing
- People who speak English
- People who currently do 60 minutes or less of structured moderate-to-vigorous exercise per week
- People who are willing and able to travel to DFCI for required data collection visits
- People who are willing and able to understand and sign a written consent form
- Women who could become pregnant must agree to take a pregnancy test and use reliable contraception (such as hormonal methods, barrier methods, or abstinence) before joining and for six months after the study ends, and must tell their treating doctor right away if they become pregnant or think they might be pregnant during the study
Who may not be able to join:
- People with a history of unstable chest pain (angina), an abnormal resting heart test (ECG), or a heart attack within the past month, as these may make certain exercise testing unsafe
- People with known spinal instability, spinal cord compression, nerve problems, or other conditions that make exercise unsafe
- People who have had spine surgery or surgery for a bone fracture within the past six weeks
- People considered unsuitable by the transplant team or study team
- People whose doctor has determined they are at high risk of a bone fracture in a weight-bearing bone, such as the spine, hip, thigh bone, or upper arm bone
- People who are unwilling or unable to take part in a regular exercise program
- People with pre-existing muscle, joint, heart, lung, or metabolic conditions that could be made worse by exercise, or any other condition their doctor considers unsafe for exercise participation
- People who are currently being treated for another active cancer
- People who already do more than 60 minutes of structured moderate-to-vigorous exercise per week
- People who are unable or unwilling to travel to DFCI for required data collection
- People who, in the opinion of the study investigators, may not be able to follow the study's safety monitoring requirements
