Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who are older than 18 years of age
- People who have been diagnosed with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF that comes and goes) or persistent atrial fibrillation (AF that lasts but has not been continuous for more than a year)
- People whose AF quality-of-life score (called the AFEQT) is 50 or below, meaning their AF symptoms are having a significant impact on daily life (confirm with trial site)
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have previously had an ablation procedure for AF or on the left side of the heart
- People who have other untreated heart rhythm problems, such as atrial flutter, certain fast heart rhythms (SVT, VT), or very frequent extra heartbeats (PVCs)
- People whose AF has been continuous for more than one year (known as long-standing persistent AF)
- People who have permanent AF
- People who do not have a recorded heart tracing (ECG) confirming an AF episode lasting more than 30 seconds in the six months before joining the trial
- People whose left upper heart chamber (left atrium) measures larger than 55 mm
- People diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (a thickening of the heart muscle)
- People with certain heart valve problems, including any narrowing of the aortic valve or moderate to severe leaking of the mitral valve
- People whose heart pumping strength (left ventricular ejection fraction) is 35% or below, based on a heart ultrasound done within six months of joining
- People with moderate or severe high blood pressure in the lungs (pulmonary hypertension)
- People with a history of a weakened heart caused by a fast heart rate
- People with symptomatic coronary artery disease (heart artery disease causing symptoms)
- People who are pregnant
- People who have an artificial heart valve
- People whose life expectancy is less than two years
- People with a known medical condition or other factor that could cause complications during the procedure or follow-up visits (confirm with trial site)
