Who might be able to join this trial:
- You are 18 years old or older and have been diagnosed with malignant mesothelioma (a type of cancer)
- You are scheduled to have surgery with a specific procedure called HIOC performed by Dr. Raphael Bueno or another thoracic (chest) surgeon at BWH (Brigham and Women's Hospital)
Who may not be able to join:
- Your kidneys are not working well enough, based on blood tests taken before surgery or at your pre-surgery appointment, or you are on dialysis or another kidney replacement treatment
- Your blood magnesium level is too high, based on pre-surgery or pre-appointment blood tests
- You are currently pregnant or breastfeeding
- You have a neuromuscular disease, such as myasthenia gravis, ALS, multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, or myositis (diseases that affect the muscles and nerves) (confirm with trial site)
- You have been diagnosed with coronary artery disease in the past year, including a positive stress test, significantly blocked heart arteries, a heart stent procedure, or bypass heart surgery
- Your heart rate has been recorded as slower than 55 beats per minute on a heart tracing (ECG) in the past 6 months
- You have a serious type of irregular heart signal between the upper and lower chambers of the heart, and you do not have a pacemaker (confirm with trial site)
- You have tested positive for COVID-19 within 10 days before your surgery
- You are currently incarcerated
- You have had an allergic reaction to magnesium sulfate in the past
- You are already taking part in another study involving an experimental treatment that could interact with intravenous (IV) magnesium
- You have any other condition that the study doctor feels could put you at greater risk or affect the study results
- There is a conflict with another study you are participating in
