Who might be able to join this trial:

For patients with idiopathic olfactory dysfunction (unexplained loss of smell):

• People between 55 and 75 years of age
• People whose loss of smell has been progressing slowly and steadily, without episodes of getting better or worse
• People who are able to give informed consent and can cooperate with the study, as assessed by the lead researcher

For healthy control participants:

• People between 55 and 75 years of age
• People who are able to give informed consent
• People who are able to cooperate with the study, as assessed by the lead researcher

Who may not be able to join:

For patients with idiopathic olfactory dysfunction (unexplained loss of smell):

• People who have been diagnosed with a brain or nerve-related disease, or a major mental health condition
• People whose loss of smell is caused by nose or sinus problems (such as chronic nasal inflammation or allergies), a head injury, an infection, a condition present from birth, surgery, or medications or toxic substances
• People whose loss of smell improved when treated with steroid medications (if these were tried)
• People with severe abnormalities or infections inside the nasal cavity
• People showing clear signs of dementia or Parkinson's disease
• People currently misusing alcohol or drugs
• People with a terminal illness

For healthy control participants:

• People who show signs of smell problems on a clinical test
• People showing clear signs of dementia or Parkinson's disease
• People with severe abnormalities or infections inside the nasal cavity
• People currently misusing alcohol or drugs
• People who have been diagnosed with a brain or nerve-related disease, or a major mental health condition
