Who might be able to join this trial:
Chronic Pain Group (pain lasting more than 6 months):
- You are 18 years of age or older
- You own a smartphone and have reliable internet access
- In the past week, your pain has been moderate to severe in terms of how intense it feels, how much it gets in the way of daily life, or how much distress it causes (a score above 3 out of 10 in any of these areas)
- Your pain has been ongoing for more than 6 months
Acute Pain Group (recent pain lasting less than 3 months):
- You are 18 years of age or older
- You own a smartphone and have reliable internet access
- In the past week, your pain has been moderate to severe in terms of intensity, interference with daily life, or distress (a score above 3 out of 10 in any of these areas)
- Your pain started less than 3 months ago due to a recent surgery, injury, illness, or childbirth
Healthy Control Group (little or no pain):
- You are 18 years of age or older
- You own a smartphone and have reliable internet access
- In the past week, your pain levels have been low (a score below 3 out of 10) for intensity, interference with daily life, and distress
- You have not had surgery, an injury, an acute illness, or given birth in the past 3 months
Optional In-Person Brain Wave Testing Sub-Study (in addition to the above):
- You have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia, chronic low back pain, or failed back surgery syndrome, OR you have never had chronic pain
- If you have chronic low back pain or failed back surgery syndrome: you are planning to have a nerve-deadening procedure, back surgery, or a spinal cord stimulator implanted in the coming months, and your insurance has approved the procedure (confirm with trial site)
- You are comfortable having brain wave (EEG) and heart rate (ECG) measurements taken
Who may not be able to join:
Chronic Pain Group:
- You have had a recent injury or surgery unrelated to your chronic pain within the past 3 months
- You are unable to take part for practical reasons, such as not having a compatible smartphone or not being able to commit to 4 months of participation
- You are not fluent in English
- You currently have cancer that started in one place or has spread to other parts of the body
Acute Pain Group:
- You have a history of long-term (chronic) pain lasting more than 6 months
- You are unable to take part for practical reasons, such as not having a compatible smartphone or not being able to commit to 4 months of participation
- You are not fluent in English
- You currently have cancer that started in one place or has spread to other parts of the body
Healthy Control Group:
- You have a history of long-term (chronic) pain lasting more than 6 months
- You are unable to take part for practical reasons, such as not having a compatible smartphone or not being able to commit to 4 months of participation
- You are not fluent in English
Optional In-Person Brain Wave Testing Sub-Study (additional reasons you may not be able to join):
- You are completely bald
- You are currently pregnant
- You have dreadlocks
- You are left-handed
- You use a wheelchair
- You have been diagnosed with heart failure
- You have a current or past history of acute psychosis or mania
- You have an implanted pacemaker, nerve stimulator, or any other implanted device in your head or heart
- You need a hearing aid to hear properly
- You experience claustrophobia (fear of enclosed spaces)
- You have metal fragments anywhere in your body
