Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who have been diagnosed with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) — a condition where stomach acid flows back into the food pipe — and still have symptoms despite taking acid-reducing medications called PPIs, want to stop taking PPIs, or cannot tolerate them
- People whose acid reflux has been confirmed by a special 24-hour test that measures acid levels and movement in the food pipe
- People whose food pipe muscle function has been tested and shown to be working normally, based on a detailed pressure measurement test
- People aged 18 years or older
- People who have signed a consent form agreeing to take part in the trial and to undergo the procedures involved
Who may not be able to join:
- People with severe inflammation of the food pipe (graded C or D on a standard medical scale)
- People with a condition called Barrett's esophagus, where the lining of the food pipe has changed over time due to acid damage
- People with a narrowing of the food pipe caused by acid damage, or a condition called eosinophilic esophagitis (a type of food pipe inflammation)
- People with a hiatal hernia of 2 cm or larger (where part of the stomach pushes up through the diaphragm)
- People with any form of cancer
- People whose food pipe muscle function test shows abnormal results
- People with enlarged veins in the food pipe or upper stomach area
- People who are pregnant
- People with serious other health conditions or who are considered at higher risk from procedures
- People aged over 70 years, due to higher procedure-related risks and the likelihood of other health conditions
- People whose symptoms are mainly linked to a stomach-related functional condition, significant anxiety or depression, or other conditions involving the connection between the gut and the brain (confirm with trial site)
