Who might be able to join this trial:

  • People aged between 20 and 65 years old
  • People who have been diagnosed with major depressive disorder (MDD) or persistent depressive disorder, and who are currently experiencing a moderate-to-severe depressive episode, confirmed by a standard depression rating scale score of 18 or higher
  • People with a more severe, long-standing form of depression (called ultra-treatment-resistant depression, or UTRD) who have had depressive symptoms for 5 or more years, have tried more than 6 different antidepressant medications without sufficient benefit, have also tried at least one add-on medication, at least one form of talking therapy, and at least one of the following treatments without sufficient response: esketamine, ketamine given through a drip, electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), or repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) (confirm with trial site)
  • People with a milder form of treatment-resistant depression who have tried at least one antidepressant medication at an appropriate dose for an appropriate length of time without sufficient benefit, and who have never had brain stimulation treatments

Who may not be able to join:

  • People for whom MRI scans are not safe or suitable (for example, those with certain metal implants)
  • People with other medical or psychiatric conditions that would make participation unsafe, or where depression is not the main psychiatric concern
  • People with a history of psychosis
  • People who have had problems with substance dependence within the last 6 months
  • People with an active neurological condition (a condition affecting the brain or nervous system)
  • People with a history of seizures or epilepsy
  • People with significant difficulties with memory or thinking (cognitive impairment)
  • People who are not able to give their own informed consent to participate
  • People who are pregnant
