Who might be able to join this trial:

• People who have been recommended to have a procedure called POEM (an internal muscle-cutting procedure done through an endoscope) for a swallowing condition called achalasia.
• People with any type of achalasia whose symptoms score above 3 on a standard symptom scale called the Eckardt score, which measures difficulties with swallowing, weight loss, chest pain, and regurgitation.
• People who have freely agreed to take part and have signed a consent form.
• People who are covered by a health insurance plan.

Who may not be able to join:

• People who have a medical reason they cannot take a type of medication called PPIs (proton pump inhibitors, commonly used to reduce stomach acid).
• People who have a tumour or cancer in the oesophagus (food pipe) or the chest area around it.
• People who have previously had a surgical procedure called a Heller myotomy (an operation to cut the muscle at the bottom of the oesophagus).
• People who need any type of surgical procedure to prevent acid reflux.
• People who are currently barred from joining other studies due to a previous clinical trial they took part in.
• People for whom it is not possible to provide understandable information to obtain informed consent.
• People who are under a legal protection measure such as court safeguarding or state guardianship.
• People who are pregnant, in labour, or currently breastfeeding.
