Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who are older than 18 years of age
- People who are scheduled for a planned (non-emergency) procedure to restore a normal heart rhythm, either as an outpatient or as a hospital inpatient, for a condition called atrial fibrillation (an irregular heartbeat)
- People for whom blood-thinning medication is considered medically appropriate
- People who meet at least one of the following conditions related to stroke prevention before the procedure: have been consistently taking blood-thinning medication for at least three weeks beforehand, have had their irregular heartbeat begin within the 48 hours before the procedure, or have had a scan of the heart (a transoesophageal echocardiogram) confirm there are no blood clots present
- People who are able to give their informed consent to both the heart rhythm procedure and participation in the study
Who may not be able to join:
- People for whom blood-thinning medication is not safe or suitable
- People whose irregular heartbeat is a specific type called atrial flutter (rather than atrial fibrillation)
- People who need an emergency procedure to restore their heart rhythm
- People who have an implanted heart device, such as a pacemaker or a defibrillator
- People who are unable to give their informed consent to the procedure or to study participation
- People who are pregnant
