Who might be able to join this trial:

• People who are willing and able to sign a written consent form agreeing to take part in the trial
• People who have been diagnosed with major depressive disorder
• People whose depression symptoms score 20 points or higher on a specific depression rating scale called the HAMD-24
• People who are experiencing either their first episode of depression or a return of depression, and who are not currently taking any psychiatric medications
• People who are of Han Chinese ethnicity and are right-handed
• People who have completed at least a junior high school level of education

Who may not be able to join:

• People who have other brain-related or mental health conditions, including intellectual disabilities or other serious psychiatric disorders
• People who have infections, injuries, autoimmune diseases, or other health conditions that could interfere with the trial's assessments
• People who are dependent on alcohol or drugs, or who are currently being treated with hormone-based medications
• People who have had a head or brain injury
• People who have a history of seizures or epilepsy, or who have a close family member with epilepsy
• People who are pregnant or breastfeeding
• People who have any metal implants in their body or any other reason they cannot safely have an MRI scan, or whose MRI scan shows an abnormal brain structure
