Who might be able to join this trial:
- Adults between 18 and 75 years old (men or women)
- People who have been diagnosed with rectal cancer before surgery, where the tumour is located very close to the lower part of the rectum (within 3cm of a specific internal landmark, as measured by MRI)
- People who do not have serious complications from the tumour before surgery, such as a blockage in the bowel, active bleeding, or the cancer growing into nearby muscles that control bowel movements
- People whose case has been reviewed by a specialist medical team and considered suitable for surgery that preserves the anal passage
- People whose bone marrow, liver, kidneys, and heart are functioning well enough to safely undergo surgery and anaesthesia
- People for whom surgeons expect to be able to remove all visible cancer during the operation
- People who are willing and able to provide written consent to participate
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have previously had a malignant (cancerous) tumour in the colon or rectum
- People who need emergency surgery due to complications such as a bowel blockage or serious bleeding
- People whose cancer has grown into surrounding organs in a way that makes complete surgical removal unlikely
- People who have more than one primary cancer tumour at the same time
- People who have a history of any other type of cancer
- People who have taken part in another clinical trial within the four weeks before enrolling in this study
- People whose overall physical health or ability to carry out daily activities falls below the level required by this trial (confirm with trial site)
- People whose liver, kidney, heart, lung, or blood clotting function makes surgery unsafe, or who have other underlying health conditions that would make surgery too risky
- People who have a history of serious mental health conditions
- Women who are pregnant or currently breastfeeding
- People who have an infection that is not under control before surgery
- People who the trial investigators determine are unsuitable for other medical or laboratory reasons
