Who may be able to join
- People who are willing and able to sign and date a consent form agreeing to take part in the study.

Who may not be able to join

- People who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- People who have a known allergy to any ingredient in the medication Truvada.
- People who have previously been treated with Truvada or Descovy.
- People whose HIV status is unknown — blood tests for HIV must have been completed either within the past 6 months or at the pre-screening visit.
- People who have active or past (latent) hepatitis B infection — specific hepatitis B blood tests must have been completed either within the past 6 months or at the pre-screening visit.
- People who currently have severe, uncontrolled, or worsening problems with their kidneys, blood, digestive system, lungs, heart, or nervous system, or other conditions that the study doctor believes would put them at unacceptable risk.
- People whose kidney filtering function is below a certain level, as measured by a calculation called the Cockcroft-Gault equation (confirm with trial site for exact threshold).
- People whose urine test shows certain levels of protein or glucose (confirm with trial site for exact threshold).
- People with a history of bone fractures that were not caused by an injury or accident.
- People with low phosphate levels in the blood at a moderate or higher level of severity (confirm with trial site).
- People who have any moderate or more serious abnormal results on screening tests (confirm with trial site).
- People who are currently taking medications known to interact with Truvada, including but not limited to: acyclovir, valacyclovir, adefovir, cabozantinib, carbamazepine, cidofovir, cladribine, cobicistat, diclofenac, multiple anti-inflammatory pain relievers (NSAIDs) or regular high doses of NSAIDs, fosphenytoin or phenytoin, ganciclovir, valganciclovir, oxcarbazepine, phenobarbital, primidone, rifabutin, rifampin, rifapentine, sofosbuvir, tipranavir, or other drugs that significantly affect kidney function.
- People who are currently taking medications known to affect Epstein-Barr virus activity, including: acyclovir, valacyclovir, ganciclovir, valganciclovir, famciclovir, teriflunomide, or interferon.
