Who might be able to join this trial:

For all participants:

• People aged 45 years or older
• People who can walk 10 metres on their own without using a walking aid such as a cane or walker
• People who are healthy enough to walk on a treadmill for 1 minute at a comfortable, self-chosen pace

For participants with diabetic nerve damage (DPN):

• People who have been diagnosed with diabetes
• People who have been diagnosed with diabetic nerve damage (DPN) by a doctor
• People who have had a foot examination within the past 6 months to confirm they are able to walk
• People whose doctor has given approval for them to take part

Who may not be able to join:

For healthy participants without any nerve or limb conditions:

• People with a history of any neurological (nervous system) condition
• People with a history of any bone or joint condition affecting the legs or feet
• People who have had an injury or pain affecting the legs, feet, or walking ability within the past 6 months

For all participants:

• People who have had any limb amputation
• People who currently have an open wound or ulcer on their foot
• People with a certain type of foot arch deformity affecting the inner side of the foot (confirm with trial site)
• People with a history of Charcot osteoarthropathy, a condition that causes bone and joint damage in the foot
• People who have had surgery to lengthen the calf or heel muscles
• People who have had a joint replacement in the lower limbs
• People who have had any surgery on the lower limbs or feet that affects the way they walk
• People with bone or joint problems in the lower limbs or spine — caused by conditions other than diabetes or diabetic nerve damage — that limit walking or cause pain while walking
• People who do not have suitable footwear for walking and everyday community activities
• People with a heart or other medical condition that affects their ability to walk safely
• People who have had unexplained dizziness or fainting episodes in the past 2 months
• People with an allergy to adhesive tape or rubbing alcohol
• People who are pregnant, currently incarcerated, or under 18 years of age
• People who are unable to communicate with the research team
• People who are unable to sign a written consent form
