Who might be able to join this trial:

This trial has three separate subgroups. People may be considered for one of the following:

Subgroup 1:

  • Adults aged 18 or older
  • A blood sugar control measure (HbA1c) below 6.5%, meaning blood sugar levels are in or near the normal range
  • Willingness to provide written consent to participate

Subgroup 2:

  • Adults aged 18 or older
  • A diagnosis of Type 1 diabetes, managed with multiple daily insulin injections or a continuous insulin pump for more than one year
  • Willingness to provide written consent to participate

Subgroup 3:

  • Adults aged 18 or older
  • A diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes, managed with tablets or insulin
  • Willingness to provide written consent to participate

Who may not be able to join:

  • People who are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • People who have smoked within the last 6 months
  • People who have been diagnosed with a long-term lung or bowel condition (such as inflammatory bowel disease, asthma, COPD, or lung cancer)
  • People who have been diagnosed with coeliac disease
  • People who have lactose or fructose intolerance
  • People currently experiencing an illness such as a viral or bacterial infection
  • People who regularly drink more than four units of alcohol per day
  • People currently using any inhaled medications
  • People who have taken antibiotics within the past 4 months
