Who might be able to join this trial:
- People aged 50 to 79 years who are patients at the Mitral Valve Clinic/CVC and are scheduled for planned (non-emergency) heart surgery to repair the mitral valve, without a specific heart rhythm procedure called the Cox MAZE procedure
- People having mitral valve repair who are also having coronary artery bypass or tricuspid valve repair at the same time may also be eligible
- People whose heart is beating in a normal, regular rhythm before surgery (no irregular heart rhythm called atrial fibrillation)
Who may not be able to join:
- People aged 80 years or older
- People who have been diagnosed with a type of irregular heart rhythm called atrial fibrillation (either ongoing or occurring in episodes) before surgery
- People who have previously had a procedure to treat atrial fibrillation using ablation (a procedure that uses energy to correct irregular heart rhythms)
- People who have had heart surgery before
- People who have a pacemaker implanted
- People who currently smoke
- People with certain other heart or health conditions, such as heart problems present from birth or a need for a repeat heart operation
- People currently taking medications used to control heart rhythm (antiarrhythmic agents)
- People with an active infection, inflammatory condition, or cancer
- People diagnosed with an autoimmune disease (where the immune system attacks the body)
- People taking steroid medications or other drugs that affect the immune system
- People with certain heart-related risk factors, including a weakened pumping function of the heart (ejection fraction below 50%), an enlarged upper left chamber of the heart (left atrium larger than 5.0 cm), or a high level of mitral valve leakage (graded 3 or 4 out of 4)
