Who might be able to join this trial:

  • You are 18 years of age or older.
  • You have been diagnosed with a long-lasting or ongoing irregular heartbeat (called persistent or long-standing persistent atrial fibrillation), confirmed by your medical records or a heart tracing test (ECG).
  • Your doctor has calculated your stroke risk score (called CHA2DS2-VASc) to be 2 or higher if you are male, or 3 or higher if you are female.
  • You are willing to undergo a keyhole surgical procedure (thoracoscopic) to close off a small pouch in the heart called the left atrial appendage (LAA).

Who may not be able to join:

  • You are planning to have an electric shock treatment (cardioversion) or a procedure to correct your heart rhythm (ablation).
  • You have another heart condition that requires surgery.
  • You have had a stroke or a blood clot-related event from the heart within the last 30 days.
  • You have had a serious bleeding episode within the last 30 days.
  • You are unable to take blood-thinning medications for medical reasons.
  • You currently have a blood clot inside your heart.
  • Your heart's pumping strength is significantly reduced (confirm with trial site).
  • You have an active infection in your body, or an infection affecting your heart lining or the sac around your heart.
  • You have severe liver disease (such as hepatitis or cirrhosis) or abnormal liver blood test results above a certain level.
  • You have severe kidney problems where your kidneys are not filtering blood well enough.
  • You need to take blood-thinning tablets long-term for another medical condition.
  • You have active plaque build-up in your main large artery (the aorta).
  • You have had a heart attack or serious heart event within the last 3 months.
  • You have significant narrowing of the arteries leading to your brain (carotid arteries) that is causing symptoms.
  • You need to take two different anti-clotting medications at the same time.
  • You have had previous surgery on your heart or left lung.
  • You have severe scarring or adhesions around your left lung or the sac around your heart.
  • You are currently pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • You have a known allergy to metal.
  • You have a serious illness where your life expectancy is less than 2 years.
  • You are currently taking part in another clinical trial.
  • You do not wish to participate in this study.
