Who might be able to join this trial:
- You have been diagnosed with preeclampsia (high blood pressure combined with protein in your urine) by your doctor
- Your medical team has decided that it is appropriate to monitor and manage your condition without delivering the baby straight away (called "expectant management")
- You are willing and able to give written consent to take part in the study
- You are 18 years of age or older
- You are between 22 weeks and 33 weeks and 6 days pregnant, and your baby is viable (capable of surviving)
- You are carrying a single baby (not twins or more)
Who may not be able to join:
- You have a medical reason why you cannot take the medication metformin (confirm with trial site)
- Your condition requires your baby to be delivered urgently, meaning expectant management is not safe for you
- You have Type 1 Diabetes
- You are currently taking metformin
- You have a known or suspected allergy to metformin
- You have language difficulties or other barriers that make it hard to fully understand what being in this study involves
- You are unable to understand and follow the consent process
- You have taken part in this study before
- Your baby is already showing signs of distress that mean delivery is needed very soon
- There is a suspicion that your baby has a significant known physical abnormality or developmental condition
- You have kidney disease or reduced kidney function (based on a specific blood test result) (confirm with trial site)
- You have a condition involving a dangerous build-up of acid in your body, such as diabetic ketoacidosis
- The study doctor does not consider you suitable for another reason
