Who might be able to join this trial:
- Adults between 18 and 65 years old who have been diagnosed with symptomatic achalasia type I or II (a swallowing condition where the food pipe has difficulty moving food into the stomach)
- People who are able to understand the study requirements, complete certain questionnaires about symptoms, and sign a consent form
- People with achalasia type I, II, or III who have never had treatment for it before, or whose previous balloon stretching procedures did not work
Who may not be able to join:
- People who are unable or unwilling to give their consent to participate
- People who have previously had surgery on their food pipe or stomach
- People who have already had certain achalasia procedures, including Heller myotomy or POEM (specific surgical or endoscopic treatments for achalasia)
- People whose food pipe has become very curved or severely widened (greater than 6cm in the lower section)
- People who have damage or scarring to the inner lining of the lower food pipe, such as ulcers or fibrotic scars
- People with a large hiatal hernia (where part of the stomach pushes up through the diaphragm) above a certain size
- People with serious heart or lung conditions that may make general anaesthesia unsafe, including those rated at a higher-risk anaesthesia category (confirm with trial site)
- People with obesity, defined as a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 or above
- People who are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or currently breastfeeding
- People with blood clotting problems that cannot be corrected, based on specific blood test results (confirm with trial site)
