Who might be able to join this trial:
- People aged 18 to 70 who have been diagnosed with major depressive disorder (MDD), or people in the same age range who have not been diagnosed with MDD (for the comparison group)
- People who pass a metal screening check to ensure MRI safety
- People with normal vision, or vision that is fully corrected to normal (for example, with glasses or contact lenses)
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have had, or currently have, neurological problems — such as seizures or a head injury that caused neurological or thinking/memory problems
- People who have lost consciousness for more than 30 minutes, or who lost consciousness for any amount of time alongside neurological symptoms
- People with serious medical conditions, such as seizure disorders, treatment with anti-seizure medications, hormonal (endocrine) disorders, or significant heart problems
- People who have been dependent on alcohol or other substances within the past year, or whose urine drug test comes back positive on the day of brain imaging
- People with known claustrophobia (fear of enclosed spaces, such as an MRI scanner)
- People who are currently pregnant
- People with an estimated IQ below 70
- People who have metal in their body, head or neck tattoos, or who are not comfortable inside an MRI scanner (confirm with trial site)
- People who are unable to attend in-person visits at the research lab in San Francisco (confirm with trial site)
