Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who are scheduled to have an open surgical procedure on the pancreas (either removing the head of the pancreas or the tail/body of the pancreas) for any medical reason
- People who are 18 years of age or older
- People who are able to understand what the trial involves and what it means for them personally
- People who have given written consent to participate, either themselves or through a legally authorised representative
- People who are capable of becoming pregnant must have a negative pregnancy test before joining and must use adequate contraception until at least 14 days after the trial procedure
- People who will have a surgical drain (a closed suction drain) left in place after their operation
- People whose surgery does not require repair or reconstruction of the arteries
- People whose surgery requires only minor repair of the portal vein (a large vein near the pancreas), such as a patch-type repair
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have previously had a bad reaction to contrast dye, a dye called ICG (indocyanine green), or any of its ingredients
- People who have previously had surgery to remove part of the pancreas
- People who have a known diagnosis of liver insufficiency, hepatitis, liver scarring (fibrosis or cirrhosis), or long-term (chronic) pancreatitis
- People who experience certain serious complications in the days after surgery, including very low blood pressure that does not improve with fluids, an unexpected transfer to intensive care, the need for more than 2 units of blood during surgery or more than 1 unit after surgery, the need for medications to raise blood pressure, or the need for emergency resuscitation
- People who develop organ failure, a complete stop in urine production, or certain recognised surgical complications — these cases will be reviewed by the lead researcher and the treating surgeon to determine whether the person should be excluded (confirm with trial site)
- People whose surgery requires reconstruction or repair of the arteries
