Who might be able to join this trial:

  • People aged 40 or older who have been diagnosed with confirmed Parkinson's disease by a neurologist who specialises in movement disorders, using standard diagnostic criteria
  • People whose Parkinson's disease was diagnosed based on symptoms that started on one side of the body and included at least 3 of the main signs of Parkinson's (muscle stiffness, slowness of movement, tremor, or balance problems)
  • People whose Parkinson's symptoms clearly improve when taking Parkinson's medications (such as reduced stiffness, slowness, or tremor)
  • People at Hoehn and Yahr (H&Y) disease stages 2, 2.5, or 3 — a rating scale used to measure how advanced Parkinson's disease is (confirm with trial site)
  • People who score above 17 on the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), a standard memory and thinking test
  • People who are able to walk at least 10 feet, with or without a walking aid
  • People whose vision, with glasses or other correction, is better than 20/70 in their better eye
  • People who are fluent in English
  • People who are willing to be randomly assigned to a treatment group

Who may not be able to join:

  • People with untreated major depression or serious psychiatric illness
  • People with a history of stroke or traumatic brain injury
  • People with significant hearing loss at certain sound frequencies (confirm with trial site)
  • People who drink alcohol heavily or regularly use antipsychotic medications
  • People who plan to leave the local area for more than one month during the study period
  • People taking medium to high doses of beta-blocker medications if their resting heart rate is below 60 beats per minute, because the study measures exercise intensity using heart rate
  • People with serious heart conditions, including advanced heart failure, significant narrowing of the aortic heart valve, a history of cardiac arrest, use of an implanted heart defibrillator, or chest pain that is not well controlled
  • People with other serious health conditions that would prevent them from taking part in an exercise-based programme, such as kidney failure requiring dialysis or drinking more than 14 alcoholic drinks per week
