Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who have been diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder (a form of clinical depression) confirmed through a structured interview process
- People who are currently experiencing at least mild depression symptoms, as measured by a standard depression rating scale
- People between the ages of 18 and 65
- People who are either not currently taking any mental health medications or receiving any mental health treatment, OR who have been on a stable mental health medication or treatment plan for the past 8 weeks and plan to continue that same plan throughout the study
- People who are considered safe to exercise, either based on answers to screening questions about physical activity or with a doctor's approval
- People who are willing to be randomly assigned to either group in the study
- People who own a smartphone
Who may not be able to join:
- People who are currently pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to become pregnant during the trial
- People with a high level of obesity classified as Class III or above (confirm with trial site for exact definition)
- People who have ever been diagnosed with, or are currently diagnosed with, Psychosis, Mania, or Bipolar Disorder
- People who are currently diagnosed with a Substance Use Disorder
- People who are currently having thoughts of suicide with a specific plan and intention to act on them, requiring immediate emergency care
- People whose behaviour, such as aggression or moderate difficulties with thinking and memory, would significantly interfere with taking part in the study, as determined by the research team
- People who are already meeting the recommended amount of resistance exercise (at least 2 days per week) and have been doing so for the past 8 weeks
- People who have had a concussion or traumatic brain injury within the last 3 months
- People who have heart disease, uncontrolled high blood pressure, or uncontrolled diabetes
