Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who have been diagnosed with stage 4 (metastatic) colorectal cancer, confirmed through a tissue sample test
- People aged between 18 and 65 years old, male or female
- Women who could become pregnant must be using an accepted form of contraception
- People who are well enough to carry out light activity and care for themselves, with a low score on a standard health performance scale (confirm with trial site)
- People who have no medical reasons preventing them from receiving chemotherapy, including no significant suppression of bone marrow function
- People whose liver is working at an adequate level, based on specific blood test results being within an acceptable range
- People whose kidneys are working at an adequate level, based on specific blood test results being within an acceptable range
- People whose blood counts (including red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, and related measures) are within an acceptable range
Who may not be able to join:
- Women who are pregnant or currently breastfeeding
- People who have another active cancer that started in a part of the body other than the colon or rectum
- People who have a known allergy to sulfasalazine or substances related to it
- People who have kidney stones, severe vomiting, or severe diarrhoea
- People who are currently taking certain medications that bind strongly to proteins in the blood or are heavily processed by the liver, such as certain blood-thinning medications (confirm with trial site for specific drugs)
- People who have a blockage in the intestines or urinary tract
- People who have a known condition called glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency, or a condition called porphyria
- People who are currently being treated with sulfasalazine or mesalamine for ulcerative colitis or rheumatoid arthritis
