Who might be able to join this trial:
- People aged 65 years or older
- People whose hospital stay is expected to last more than 7 days
- People who are able to understand and follow instructions
- People with a minimum level of muscle strength in all four limbs (rated at least 3 out of 5 on a standard scale), and a grip strength of at least 26 kg for males or 18 kg for females
Who may not be able to join:
- People with serious heart conditions, including recent heart attack, unstable chest pain, poorly controlled irregular heartbeat, complete blockage of the heart's electrical signals, acute heart failure, or inflammation of the heart or its surrounding tissue
- People with poorly controlled blood pressure — specifically, a top blood pressure reading below 90 or above 200, even while on medication
- People admitted to hospital because of an acute brain or nervous system condition, such as epilepsy, stroke, or Parkinson's disease
- People who have been diagnosed with cognitive impairment or Alzheimer's disease
- People who require long-term breathing machine (ventilator) support and are unable to take part in the program
- People whose level of consciousness is too low to allow them to cooperate with the program
- People who score below 12 on a standard alertness and awareness test (the Glasgow Coma Scale), or who are unable to correctly answer basic questions about who they are, where they are, or what time it is
