Who might be able to join this trial:

• People who have been diagnosed with a condition affecting the large bowel or rectum that requires urgent open abdominal surgery through a cut down the middle of the abdomen.
• People who start with keyhole (laparoscopic) surgery urgently but need to be switched to open abdominal surgery during the procedure.
• People who need urgent surgery on the large bowel and/or rectum, even if other abdominal conditions are also present.
• People who are over 18 years of age.
• People who have signed a consent form agreeing to take part, alongside sign-off from the research doctor.

Who may not be able to join:

• People who have severe or unstable chronic lung disease (a breathing condition called COPD at an advanced stage).
• People with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 35 or above (a measure of body weight relative to height).
• People who are having a repeat open abdominal surgery (a second operation through the same abdominal opening as a previous one).
• People with psychiatric conditions, addiction issues, or any other difficulty that would prevent them from fully understanding the consent form.
• People who are unable to read or understand Catalan or Spanish, as those are the languages the consent form is available in.
